Changes for orthodontic assistant training in Maryland – and how Trapezio can help

In 2008, Trapezio recognized a critical need for an efficient, cost-effective, and accessible way to help orthodontic assistants in Maryland earn their Expanded Functions Qualification, which was required by the state. At that time, the existing training options were limited and there was difficulty meeting the specific needs of orthodontic teams.

In response, Trapezio worked closely with Maryland doctors and pursued board approval for its OrthodonticAssisting Level 1 and Orthodontic Assisting Level 2 programs. These comprehensive programs were designed to prepare orthodontic assistants to sit for the Maryland Expanded Functions Exam. With this educational background and hands-on experience necessary, assistants could then apply to the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners to become Dental Assistants Qualified in Orthodontics.

This process of board approval was successfully completed in April 2009, marking a significant milestone for Trapezio and Maryland orthodontic teams. Since then, over 600 orthodontic team members in Maryland have successfully completed these orthodontic training courses towards achieving their qualifications. The success of these programs underscores the effectiveness of Trapezio’s training model and its impact on Maryland’s orthodontic community.

Trapezio’s Role in Orthodontic Assisting and Training

In addition to providing high-quality orthodontic training, Trapezio has earned the distinction of being the only staff training program endorsed by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). This endorsement not only highlights the credibility of Trapezio’s programs but also reinforces the quality of education that orthodontic assistants, and other orthodontic team members, receive through its courses. The support of the AAO further affirms that Trapezio’s orthodontic training aligns with industry standards and best practices, ensuring that orthodontic assistants are well-equipped to excel in their roles.

The 2022 Proposed Changes: A Challenge for Orthodontic Assisting

In 2022, the Maryland Board of Dental Examiners proposed significant changes to the qualifications for orthodontic assistants. These changes included eliminating the existing Dental Assisting Qualified in Orthodontics credential and replacing it with the title Orthodontic Expanded Function Dental Assistant. More notably, the proposal introduced stricter regulations for board-approved training programs, which raised concerns among orthodontic professionals and team members alike.

The initial draft of the proposal had the potential to eliminate the option for online orthodontic assisting courses, which were an essential option for assistants who may not have the ability to attend in-person classes due to time constraints, geographic limitations, or other factors. Class availability is also limited in less populated areas as the frequency and location of classes is driven by demand. In areas with less demand, and smaller in-person class sizes, the feasibility of frequent, affordable classes for small numbers is greatly decreased.

For orthodontic assistants—especially those in rural areas, full-time employees, and working mothers—these new regulations would have created significant barriers to obtaining the qualifications needed for their roles. Furthermore, in an industry that already faces high turnover rates and staffing shortages, these changes would have exacerbated the challenges that Maryland orthodontic practices face in hiring and retaining trained team members.

Advocacy and a Path Forward for Orthodontic Assisting

Recognizing the potential impact of these proposed changes, orthodontists and practice owners across Maryland voiced their concerns, submitting formal complaints to legislators about the difficulties that the proposed regulations would create. Their advocacy led to a revised proposal that sought to maintain the option for online orthodontic training programs. Under the new proposal, online training programs would remain an approved pathway, provided they incorporate a 10-hour hands-on clinical component.

This revision is a critical development for Maryland orthodontic assistants, as it allows for continued access to online training programs while still ensuring that assistants receive the hands-on, practical experience necessary for success in the field. Trapezio is particularly well-suited to meet this requirement, as the organization has always emphasized the importance of practical, hands-on learning. Since its early days, Trapezio has offered various in-person training opportunities, including hands-on classes, retreats, training guides, and practical learning experiences. These hands-on experiences are woven into the very fabric of Trapezio’s approach to orthodontic training and assisting.

Trapezio’s Ongoing Commitment to Accessible Orthodontic Training

As of now, the revised proposal remains under discussion within the Maryland state legislature. Trapezio continues to monitor the developments closely, remaining actively engaged in advocating for flexible, accessible training solutions that support both orthodontic practices and their team members. The organization’s mission remains clear: to provide high-quality orthodontic training and orthodontic assisting opportunities that meet the needs of modern orthodontic practices and help train the next generation of skilled orthodontic assistants.

By offering innovative training solutions that blend online learning with hands-on experience, Trapezio ensures that orthodontic teams are well-equipped to deliver exceptional care while meeting state regulations. Trapezio is committed to helping Maryland’s orthodontic professionals navigate regulatory changes, ensuring that all team members have access to the education and qualifications they need to succeed.
